Instead of your usual holiday, which can be pretty tiring when you're trying to see all the sights, experience the nightlife and indulge in tasty treats, a wellness getaway will have you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. Here’s what’s going on at Ireland’s top wellness retreats this autumn:


What: Revive and Ready Yoga Weekend. There are other themed retreats of varying lengths throughout the year.

When: 28-30 September

Led by: Michelle Moroney

The retreat: This retreat suits all ages and abilities, with lots of mindfulness meditation, gentle yoga classes and long walks by the ocean. Let go of everyday stresses with deep relaxation classes, and bring balance to the body and mind with restorative yoga. Relax upon arrival and get your bearings, then enjoy a 90 minute yoga class on teh Friday followed by a healthy dinner and an introduction chat about hte weekend. Begin Saturday with early morning meditation, a healthy breakfast buffet, a silent walk followed by a two hour yoga class. After lunch enjoy free time with the options to visit Lahinch beach, go surfing, take a tour of the local area including the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren or enjoy a treatment. The glass fronted sauna and woodburning hot tub are also available. Before dinner there is another two hour yoga class. Sunday involves more meditation, walking and yoga before a celebration farewell lunch.

The food: The food is healthy and organic with a priority on local produce, and vegetables are grown onsite. Sample menus include dishes like beetroot falafel with red pepper relish and roasted veggies, or ratatouille bake with lentil and pea salad followed by a chocolate chia mousse.

The accommodation & price: Rooms are bright and comfortable with stunning views. A quad room is €360pp, a twin with shared bathroom is €395. A single with a shared bathroom is €435 and a twin/double with ensuite is €415. A single ensuite is €485.

What: Luxury yoga and nutrition retreat

When: 19-21 October

Led by: Jess Hatchet

The retreat: Settle in on Friday with a yoga practice followed by dinner at 8pm. Relax with a Yoga Nidre meditation at 9pm before bed. Begin at 7am on Saturday and Sunday with a yoga practice, before breakfast followed by a two hour yoga session, focusing on specific Asanas and posture flows. Enjoy a break in the afternoon before another more experimental yoga practice. Finish the evening with dinner followed by a meditation.

The food: Prepared by Rachel Dare of Organico Bantry

The accommodation & price: Most of the rooms at the centre are twin, with prices from €390pp sharing. A private double room with ensuite is €420pp sharing.

What: Falling Into Silence retreat

The retreat: This weekend of hibernation and relaxation will leave you feeling revived as we head into autumn. The focus is on getting back to a state of peace within yourself, with meditation and deep relaxation. Daily yoga, a spa treatment or seaweed bath worth up to €50 and two complementary hours in Delphi Spa’s thermal suite are also included.

The food: Enjoy cleansing herbal tea ceremonies, juices and smoothies and a buffet breakfast. Guests will receive a menu with light and healthy lunches and the price includes a three course evening meal in the 814 Restaurant.

What: Ultimate Escape

When: Available throughout the year

The retreat: Relax in the beauty of this eco retreat with a two night break in a cabin nestled in the picturesque Leitrim hills. Enjoy an uisce hour in Ard Nahoo’s outdoor hot tub and detox sauna. The sauna heats damaged tissue through infrared rays, which heat the body not the air, a detoxifying experience that soothes the muscles, clarifies the skin and burns between 900 and 2,400 calories per session. You can even book the hot tub for a stargazing session!

The food: Guests receive an organic welcome pack with breakfast foods, and a complementary organic supper on one night delivered to the cabin, consisting of a vegetarian dish with dessert.

What: Five day retreat, with special options for weight-loss and liver-flush

When: Every week until 23-28 September

The retreat: Prep for your retreat by cutting out tea, coffee and sugar and reducing meat intake for seven days beforehand, to reduce the impact of withdrawals so you benefit more from the retreat. Arrive between 5-6.30pm for your introduction at 7pm followed by a fruit supper. The detox retreat is designed to nurture the mind, body and spirit, leaving your feeling brighter, with renewed energy and sense of wellbeing. The weight-loss retreats have extra focus on walking, yoga and some extra juice-fasting. The liver and gallbladder flush retreat eliminates congestion and improves the elimination of toxins from the body. The area is surrounded by quiet picturesque roads anda beach which are ideal for walks.

The food: The focus is on a cleansing diet based exclusively on organic fruit and vegetables. To further assist detoxing, the principles of food combining are adhered to. Every morning begins with a wheatgrass shot and Wednesday is a juice-fast day. Optional extras include shiatsu massage, reflexology and life and wellness coaching.

What: Women’s Relax and Restore Retreat. They also offer other themed retreats throughout the year, such as canoeing and yoga, oriental detox and cookery.

When: 5-7 October or 9-11 November

The retreat: This retreat is all about relaxing, with massage, meditation and yoga. Enjoy dinner followed by Tai Chi class on the Friday, followed by a massage. At 6.35am you have the option of taking a boat across the lake to Inis Rath Island before yoga for a morning chat with cymbals to begin the day. Enjoy a gentle yoga class before breakfast followed by rest time. You will receive two therapies on the Saturday and can book additional treatments. Try aromatherapy full body massage, reiki energy healing, Indian head massage, sound healing and more. There are meditation classes before lunch followed by a 90 minute walk at Crom estate, with earth meditation along the way. Enjoy massages and therapies on your return. Sunday begins with yoga and breakfast followed by an Indian vegetarian cookery demo from Carmen. Visit the temple to ding sacred songs and afterwards you have the option of a tak on Vedic wisdom of ancient India, or walk through the 22 acre wooded island. Enjoy a feast in the temple before returning to the mainland.

The food: This is a vegetarian retreat, a combination of Indian food like curries and samosas (it won’t be too hot!) and western vegetarian food like salads and pastas.

The accommodation & price: Single, ensuite or triple rooms can be booked privately or for sharing. The retreat costs €229, and you can book additional therapies on the Friday (40 mins €21, 50 mins €25).

What: The Wave retreat at Linden House, Glengarriff Cork

When: 22-25 August — book quickly as their retreats sell out fast!

The retreat: A sample day at Linden House is jam-packed. After breakfast, take a boat trip to stroll through the gardens of Garnish Island. Enjoy a packed lunch and a 3-4 hour hike on Dursey island, accessed via cable car. There will be a group nutrition coaching session and the price includes exercise classes such as circuit training and yoga. The Wave specialises in retreats along the Wild Atlantic Way — other locations for retreats this year have include the beautiful Dunowen House in Clonakilty and Castle Murray House in Donegal.

The food: All meals are prepared using local produce in a healthy and nutritious style.

The accommodation & price: €840pp for a twin room or double, €960 for single occupancy. Linden House is a stunning cottage with ten bedrooms and glorious views of Garnish Island. It is built into the hillside and split over three levels, making the most of the views of Glengarriff Harbour.
